On 3rd May 2018, Moz launched the new link explorer and updated it’s API to server metrics from their new database. Here is everything you need to know about this if you buy expired domains.
The new link explorer has 4.7 trillion links, that is 50% more than Ahrefs. This means that they now crawl a lot more data than they used to and obviously a change like this will change all existing metrics.
Here are things you need to do.
- DA will drop for all domains – Similar to how Ahrefs DR dropped for all websites, you can expect the Moz Domain Authority to dip a little across the board. It will take sometime for domain brokers to re-align what the new and old metrics mean.
- Moz Metrics now update daily – Moz used to update their metrics once a month. However, following in Ahrefs and Majestic’s steps, they now update their numbers daily.
- Moz Rank and Moz Trust might be discarded – Not much clarity here. However based on Rand’s latest whiteboard friday, it looks like Moz will focus only on DA and PA. The API still return this data – but might start returning 0 in the future.
- Spam Score has changed – Spam score now goes from 0 to 100. The larger the number, the more spammy the domain. However, the API still returns the old metrics till now. This should change in the future.
- Do not use Open Site Explorer (OSE) – OSE will no longer be updated, but you will still be able to use it. Unfortunately this means that if you check the OSE you will be seeing old data and might make decisions based on that. We suggest you not use OSE at all for that reason. The new link explorer does not seem to have a freemium model. So, you will be able to use it only if you have a paid Moz Pro account.
The domain industry will take a few weeks to re-calibrate what the new DA numbers are. Till then you can expect some turbulence in our space. DomCop has switched over to the new API and so all domains are currently being updated to show the new metrics. You will need access to the new link explorer to check these metrics – remember that OSE shows old metrics.
